After the abrupt, pandemic break, the iconic rock opera Jesus Christ Superstar, directed and staged by Jakub Wocial and Santiago Bello, returns to Poland with a private Broadway production. We invite you to a strictly limited number of performances scheduled for spring 2024. It’s an extraordinary, thoroughly piercing mystery play, taking both the audience and the performers on stage to emotional heights. With this kind of event, you have to experience it in person!
Superb vocals, a dynamic storyline and choreography planned to the smallest detail all combine to make the show an incredibly electrifying experience, as well as a visually stunning and deeply moving adventure. This production was first presented on the stage of the Warsaw’s Rampa Theatre in 2016 and immediately conquered the hearts of reviewers and loyal audiences alike.
In the title role we will see the aforementioned Jakub Wocial, as well as Maciej Podgórzak, who made his debut in the performance just before the pandemic break. The role of Mary Magdalene will be played by Natalia Piotrowska-Paciorek and Wiktoria Białecka, while the character of Judas by Maciej Pawlak and Jakub Wocial, who made his debut in this role in the German staging in Oper Wuppertal.
Jesus Christ Superstar is an iconic rock opera about the seven last days of the life of Jesus Christ that shook up the musical theatre world in the 1970s. Initially, it was only released as a concept album, because of concerns that in theatrical form, it might be received as iconoclasm. And although this work is still controversial, for many it’s also a profound spiritual experience, and in the staging signed by Wocial and Bello, it was described as a “rock retreat” (Jan Bończa-Szabłowski, “Rzeczpospolita”).
Wocial and Bello’s staging is well thought out and superbly directed, leaving the audience engaged into what’s happening on and off the stage. The masterful musical interpretations take you into another dimension (Jakub Panek, Gazeta.pl), and the collective choreographies are not limited to dance interludes, but form an integral part of the story being told. “All of this gathered together is a meticulously woven whole, an intricate mosaic of emotions and excitement in which the talent and sensitivity of the performing artists are mixed” (Szymon Ludwiczak, szymonokulturze.pl).
