The play is based on authentic events described by the Chicago Tribune reporter. Its world première took place in Broadway, in 1975, with Bob Fosse as director, but two years later the musical was withdrawn from the repertoire. Since its restaging in 1996, it has been played to this day. Moreover, the film adaptation by Rob Marshall was a success, and the film won as many as six Oscars. The play has been translated in several languages and staged all around the world. Krakow VARIETE Theatre is currently the only place on the map of Poland, where you can see this hugely popular show!
Chicago tells the story of two rivalling murderers imprisoned in the Cook County prison. Roxie, a housewife dreaming of a cabaret career, is waiting for a process, accused of having assassinated her lover. Velma, star of the stage, was sentenced for killing her husband and sister. Their fierce struggle for media publicity is supported by the corrupt head of the prison, Mama Morton, and the skilful manipulator, lawyer Billy Flynn, who makes Roxie quickly become favourite of the press. What will the result of the trial? To what actions can greed and jealousy lead? Will Velma and Roxie conquer the scene as a “duo of murderers”?
These questions will not only help to solve the resounding case but they also promise a huge dose of unforgettable experiences.
