The première of the fun and moving film Pretty Woman, directed by Garry Marshall, became in Hollywood prime event of the 1990 season. The role of Vivian has made Julia Roberts, a young actress at the beginning of her career, one of the most recognisable stars of the silver screen, while the character of Edward strengthened Richard Gere’s position among many women as a man of their dreams. Pretty Woman – The Musical was written on the basis of a book and script written jointly by the director Garry Marshall and scriptwriter J. F. Lawton. The music, inspired by the late 1980s and early 1990s rock, was composed by Bryan Adams – rock music icon and Grammy award winner, while the lyrics were written by Jim Vallance, who has worked with him for many years. The Adams-Valance duo is responsible for such well-known hits as “Summer of ‘69”, “Cuts like a knife” or “Heaven”. The musical was first staged at Broadway on 16 August 2018, beating the sales record at the Nederlander Theatre four times and three times winning the Audience Choice Award.
