DESCRIPTION

THE HAPPIEST DAY
performance for one actress
inspired by the person of Elżbieta Czyżewska

It’s 13 June 1965. The happiest day in the life of young Elżbieta Czyżewska. The actress sits on the hood of a blue car and waves to the crowds gathered in the stadium, who cheer her. She doesn’t know yet that she will leave Poland in the spring of 1968 and that the life as she has been living so far will change completely. Elżbieta Czyżewska’s biography would be enough for several people. Her life resembles the fairy tale of Cinderella, who grows up in poverty and takes the world by storm. We adults love such tales, don’t we? And yet Czyżewska doesn't want to talk about herself! Even after her death, she doesn’t seem happy that someone is going to make a performance about her. So, she will agree to that, but on one condition. Oh, Elżbieta, our wild flower, it’s impossible not to love her!

This won’t be an ordinary biographical performance, it’ll rather be a kind of theatrical merry-go-round! Recital, monodrama, fairy-tale, one woman show, all in one. Or, if you prefer: a literary fantasy based on a few objects and facts, a universal tale of destiny. Or perhaps even... a gift for Elżbieta herself? For sure you’ll discover the mystery of the suitcase she had to pack one day forever... But apart from that, nothing is obvious when it comes to Elżbieta Czyżewska.

The performance will include songs from the 1960s performed by Elżbieta Czyżewska in television programmes, as well as an excerpt from Andrzej Wajda’s script from the 1967 film "Everything for Sale".

The actress is accompanied by a music band.

FROM THE AUTHOR

This performance was the initiative of Barbara Garstka, who has a special, even personal relationship to Elżbieta Czyżewska. I readily agreed to this collaboration, without knowing what I was actually signing up for.... I must have looked through hundreds of materials about Czyżewska: books, interviews, films. I spent a lot of time in the archives. It wasn’t easy, because when you get into the life of someone so interesting and complex, it turns out to be a bottomless well. How to embrace something like this and fit it into a performance of a couple dozen minutes? On top of that, I subconsciously felt that Czyżewska didn’t want to be talked about. I tried to understand this resistance, I could almost feel her anger. I argued with Czyżewska over a piece of paper for a long time. Until I finally understood her and I think we reached an agreement. I decided to just let her do in my performance what she always wanted to do most. Play.
