DESCRIPTION

Mack the Knife, chief of a group of rouges, sensitive lover who is familiar with all the prostitutes in London, or perhaps a man who is planning a future with his wife, Polly? Who is Mack, actually? What will be the result of his competition with Jonathan Peachum, head of the company The Beggar's Friend and his rival in the world of crime? And how will good relations with Brown, the head of the police, help Mack? This evergreen story hides a lot of emotions and even more plot twists.

Despite the suggestive title, the Threepenny Opera is actually not an opera in terms of music genre. We will not hear extensive airs, sublime recitatives or choirs. Kurt Weill created a new type of musical theatre – accessible and understandable to all, with music that resounds with dance rhythms of foxtrot, tango, jazz and the climate of cabarets and cafés.

As one of the most interesting works in the history of the musical and dramatic theatre, the Threepenny Opera gained international recognition. It has been present in the theatre repertoires since its première in 1928, and its content remains relevant up to this day. Bertolt Brecht used in this play a kind of subterfuge, gave the bourgeoisie something that it would certainly like, and at the same time he told a few bitter truths about the bourgeois world and its condition.

At the Krakow VARIETE Theatre, director Jerzy Jan Połoński combines the elements of formal, dramatic and dance theatre in one play. He introduces magic, illusion, pantomime and pyrotechnic effects. He brings out the visual impact and glamour characteristic of the musical. He provokes, plays, but also inspires reflection. After all what means robbing a bank compared to founding one? What means murdering a person compared to hiring one?
